A windless hug

PERA GIALOS

Until 2004, Pera Gialos was the main port of Astypalea, maintaining a strategic position, below the hill of Chora settlement, where the 8 traditional windmills and the Venetian castle of the 15th century stand out. Today it remains a pole of attraction for young and old, hosting a windless beach with pebbles and tamarisks, and a small marina for sailboats, yachts and boats of local fishermen, at the edge of the bay.

Pera Gialos hosts the Archaeological Museum of Astypalea, which records characteristic moments of the history of the island through the centuries. The church of Aghios Nikolaos is located in the nearby area, well known for its beautiful courtyard and the characteristic blue dome.

The invaluable treasure of Pera Gialos is the magical moment of sunrise! When the first rays of light shine through the sea, the houses of Chora, the Venetian castle, as the fishing boats return to shore! Try to follow the whitewashed paths that will lead you to the main square of Chora.

Transportation

Right in front of the Pera Gialos beach, there is a bus stop, while in the area one can find rental offices for cars and motorbikes. From its pier, small sailing boats depart every morning for day trips to the neighboring islands. Pera Gialos is home to most of the island’s services, the port authority, the police station, the pharmacy and the only bank branch on the island.
